Yeah this is completely random, but one can't spend all of their hobby time making models! I found some plans online for two different beds and combined them. The underside is for storage so I can get rid of my old Ikea dresser (those ones that got recalled for tipping). I realize it could have been tacked to the wall but I just didn't really have the room. Anyway I won't ramble too much, I realize 0% of people looking at my blog would click this post haha.
An unfeasibly tidy bedroom ! The bed looks impressive and very sturdy, being 6'3" tall I have never been a fan of beds with footboards for obvious reasons. May your mattress never sag and your wife never snore !!!!
ReplyDeleteThe footboard only extends 1" above the mattress, but yeah in hindsight I probably would have dropped it another inch, just thought it would look weird if the duvet was taller than the frame :)

ReplyDeleteThanks! Not really, I'm sure you know it was the sanding/staining/sealing that took all of the time. I spent way more time 'planning' and going to Home Depot than actually cutting :) Sadly I did this in the fall and once the winter chill showed up and dried out the air, I heard a few cracks in the headboard but nothing structural (just a board or two now have hairline cracks. The underside is all plywood so it won't have the same expansion issues. That's my inexperience with building showing through. I should have allowed for expansion but since I was mostly following some plans I never considered it. I'd made table tops before and allowed for expansion, so this was just a real rookie mistake. Lesson learned!
DeleteI guess that's my other question. Did you design this? You mentioned sort of merging two other plans. Were you winging it based on those? I'm trying to decide how much effort it's worth putting into learning how to use SketchUp or something similar.
DeleteSort of winged it. There were some plans online for the headboard/footboard that I liked but I adjusted the height and width to fit my mattress. That all worked out fine. The base was another set of plans that I liked the idea behind (boxes) so I designed something similar to fit in with the headboard design. I basically drew a lot of sketches on grid paper. I also put a door in the footboard to access underneath. The only issue is the wood dried out because the 7" span of headboard is kreg screwed together so it wasn't happen when the boards dried out. This would have been easily avoided by not screwing the boards together and only to the supports. A free design program would be quite handy though. It would have saved me lots of time on the tables/workbench I m ade.
